Tips and tricks for capturing this iconic city in a day.

Most people know the Maldives for it's fancy overwater bungalows, but there are hundreds of alternative islands you can visit.

The local islands may not have the high-end resorts, but the beaches are just as beautiful!

My favourite local island is Fulidhoo

It takes three hours by ferry to get there from Male. Cost: $7

Our guesthouse was clean, spacious, comfortable, with a pool, and steps away from the beach. Cost: $60 a night

Meals were fresh, delicious, and inexpensive. I spent just $5 a day

You can even take a day trip out to the fancy resort islands

It costs $50 to spend the day at a resort like this. You'll be able to use all the facilities, too, experiencing a taste of luxury on the cheap

travelling on a budget in the maldives is superior to visiting the luxury  resorts

The resorts are built on their own islands, isolating you from the rest of the country.

Staying on the cheaper islands will give you an insight into Maldivian life that few people have ever experienced.

On fulidhoo, I arrived and learned that i was the only tourist on the entire island

it was an incredible experience

on maafushi, i found a beach that was prettier than the ones on the resort islands

in the maldives, more expensive doesn't equal more beautiful
