I have an obsessive personality.
When I say obsessive, I MEAN obsessive. One of my biggest obsessions to date was that of the TV show LOST.
I spent hours everyday watching episodes, going on fansites, formulating theories, buying weird LOST related items on eBay – I was totally crazy for the show. And what better way to feed my obsession than by going to see the exact place where LOST is filmed. Fortunately, my boyfriend at the time was equally as infatuated with the show as I was, so we booked our tickets for Hawaii, and we were off!
Not wanting to spend our whole holiday running around squealing because we’d found a restaurant where a character once ate (trust me… I’d do that), we decided to limit our time to spend just 48 hours driving around searching for as many LOST filming sites as possible. There are hundreds of resources online giving maps and directions to near enough every filming spot, so it wasn’t too hard finding all of these places. What was hard was trying to narrow down which places to see as you could literally spend weeks trying to see everything.

LOST was actually filmed on two different beaches throughout the show on opposite sides of the island. The first beach used for filming is Mokule’ia Beach, which was used for the plane crash in the pilot episode.
The Others’ Camp
This was by far the most exciting part of the tour for me. The others’ camp in LOST is better known as the YMCA Camp Erdman, and it’s super-accessible and easy to find. We’d read online before that this was private property and you weren’t allowed to just wander around taking photos. Like that was going to stop us!
We arrived and noted the security office overlooking the area. Nervously, we waited for the guard to get up from his desk before running as fast as we could into the camp and hiding breathlessly behind the buildings. We were in! It was really strange wandering around somewhere so familiar, and I kept half expecting Ben to come running out of his house.

We visited the main beach on Christmas Day, so no filming was taking place and most of the set had been packed away for the holidays which was a shame. There was a friendly security guard who pointed who lived in which tents, and showed us some filming spots such as Eko’s church and the graves of some of the characters.

Whilst driving around looking for the main sites, we spotted a few other minor filming locations around the island.
This is really great! I have friends that live on Oahu and he was an extra on one episode. Loved the show, so I’ll have to look for these on our next visit.

This is awesome – I love the dedication. Not a big fan of LOST myself but I still can imagine what it must be like to see the locations where your favorite scenes are shot.
It was entirely bizarre and I kept expecting to see all of the characters wandering around! It’s a shame that we visited right over the Christmas period when they were having a break from filming or we would have been able to meet some of the cast :)
Wow – I had no idea you could go to see the fuselage! That’s really cool but would be kind of scary for visitors to the airport if they didn’t know what it was :D

I am impressed by your devotion to the show. I grew up on Oahu, so I recognize a lot of the places from the it. I can’t imagine the dedication and research it must have took you to find the non-marked sites. What a unique experience to have on the island! I haven’t gone to see what they left behind of the set, but maybe I should the next time I’m home.

That’s a good point, although it would be great if they left it all behind, I doubt there’s anything to see now.
My hero!!! I SO want to do this myself, I too was obsessive about LOST. TV just hasn’t been worth watching since it ended. You saw so many different places that were filmed in the show, that’s so awesome! :) Looking forward to seeing your next post about the more private filming locations.
Hahaha! I’m always glad to meet another obsessive! There’ll never be another TV show like it, and I’m so sad it’s over!
*roling eyes* oh Lauren lol. I can only imagine seeing you this ‘sleuth like’. True dedication and total excitement at it haha. My friend was the same when we went to Paris – we just HAD to eat at Amelie’s restaurant haha. You should have seen her face when (without her knowing I was doing it) took her past the fruit and veg shop…she almost passed out – rather like how you sound =D x

Must have been a wonderful feeling! I would love to go to the Harry Potter sets! I’m a huge fan! I like really huge. I read the fanfiction, surf the sites, go to the midnight showings, etc

I went in 2008. I’m sure that it is still there, i’ve heard that most of the set stuff like that is still up.
(And that sounds AMAZING!! I want to get married in it now!)

I LOVE this post. I was a massive fan of lost and really want to go to Hawaii and visit the sites. Once the show finished I sort of forgot but now I want to go back again so much more!

I’m pretty certain the buildings would all still be there. I think there’s still LOST tours running in Hawaii so I’d imagine there’s still a lot of props hanging around :-)
I am going there in 2 weeks, but there will probably not be anything left to see of the set. But being on the locations are great stuff for me. Wonder if Flight 815 wreckage is still in the airport, do you know that?

Lauren, hello! My daughter announced she is getting hitched on Oahu and she told me that LOST was filmed there and I could see the sights.
Tonight my wife and I are Starting to watch Lost, from season 1 episode 1 so before I start, I wanted to Google Lost and Oahu.
I did and Your Blog is the first I’m reading! It’s from 2008 lol!
Anyways we plan on going to Oahu December 2018

I’m an Australian who’s heading over to Hawaii (O’ahu) for the first time in January, 2019, and after reading this thread on the LOST locations am inspired to also visit most, if not all.
I have a question though…when exactly did you visit and would you know if the plane wreckage is still viewable at Dillingham Airfield? If so, what’s the exact location to make it easier to find?

Ah, I visited way back in 2008, so I really don’t know how much is going to still be around on the island. A quick google told me that unfortunately the plane wreckage was removed from Dillingham Airfield in 2010.
The very last photo, where Desmond killed the guy on the rocks – Where was that? I will be on Oahu in a couple months and want to see that especially.
Oh man, sorry, I can’t remember. I did this trip in 2008, so it’s all a little blurry now. I did some googling and it looks like it could be the Lanai Lookout?
That place is called The Spitting Cave in Portlock. A short walk from the street. My favorite spot on Oahu. I lived there for several years and was an extra on LOST season 6.

I’m trying to decide if a tour is worth it. I only have 3 days in oahu. Should I rent a car and try locate them all on my own or is it better to just do a tour and see it all in one day?

Really enjoy reading all the posts. My husband and I are total LOST fans. After the show there was an online auction from CA where they sold hundreds of items from the actual show and I was the successful bidder on Rousseau’s music box (not the smashed version). I love it!!! We are going to Hawaii next year will follow your advice. Thanks!
